It’s Amazing and does not get bigger than this. There hundreds of rock ‘n’ roll items were up for the grabs in rock and roll auction at the New York City on Saturday. But just imagine Michael Jackson’s famous white glove that was among several items owned by Michael Jackson, was the night’s big seller for $350,000, soaring far past pre-sale estimates. The buyer was Hong Kong businessman Hoffman Ma.
Other items of MJ on sale included a car driven by MJ and the black, strap and zipper-laden jacket which he wore during a 1989 world “Bad” tour fetched $225,000.
CEO of Julien’s Auctions who ran the auction, Darren Julien, referred the glove as “the Holy Grail of Michael Jackson,” and many of them expected it to sell for far more than its pre-sale estimate of about $50,000. The final price excluding taxes ran to around $420,000.
Michael Jackson had worn the white glove during his first staged the famous moonwalk dance at the 1983 Motown 25 television special. Before peaking at $350,000, the opening bid of $10,000 leaped immediately to $120,000.
The auctioneer said that most of MJ 80 items came from family and friends, to whom Jackson had given them. Michael Jackson was a collector himself, having paid more than $1.5 million for the “Gone With the Wind” best picture Oscar statue at Sotheby’s auction which was one of the highest prices ever paid for memorabilia at auction.
At $80,000 to $100,000, the auction house had valued the Michael collection. But Julien said those pre-auction estimates were intentionally conservative to help create interest. Many of Michael’s items sold for 10 or even more than 20 times the estimates.
Jackson has died but his amazing items still make us feel that MJ is alive.
