The Dutton Mariner is a purpose built fibreglass amphibian from a two-door petrol car which is being sold by a Christchurch man on Trade Me for $9100. The previous owner used it to commute accross Auckland Harbour. The car is fully sea-worthy as the license plate ‘WETCAR’ suggests.

Now, the car is up for auction for grabs with an initial pricing at $24,000.

As the biggest automotive event of China is all set to start, the leading luxury car makers of world are revealing new models to drive up sales in the Far East.

At the event, among the car makers gearing up to make their presence felt, is the British luxury car maker Bentley, who intends to launch its special-edition Continental models for the Chinese market.

In collaboration with Roll Royce, these special edition Continental Gts designed and engineered features Magenta and Orange as accent colors and Magenta Metallic and Orange Flame along with selected wood veneers in Piano Black and dark-stained Burr Walnut.

At Bentley’s Crewe headquarters, these special editions will be created and will be available on sale via the nine dealerships across China.

I think there is no any doubt to anyone that the all-new 2011 Hyundai Sonata is very important vehicle to the Korean automaker. The all-new Sonata, combining a new exterior with performance that rivals the best, is out to increase market share in one of the hottest-contested classes in the U.S.

Now, Hyundai has launched the requisite eco-friendly Sonata variant, the Sonata Hybrid at the 2010 New York Auto Show. Hyundai has made quite a few visual changes to the Sonata Hybrid’s exterior. Equipment unique to the hybrid version of the Sonata are the bumper fascias, headlights and taillights, rocker panels, ‘eco-spoke’ wheels, front grille, side sills and air dam, badging and paint color.

Some changes are purely cosmetic, but Hyundai says that many are functional which make the Sonata Hybrid more aerodynamic and lowering its drag coefficient to a slippery 0.25. The 2011 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid marks the first production use of Hyundai’s Hybrid Blue Drive technology that can operate independently on either its 169-horsepower 2.4-liter gasoline engine or its 40-horsepower electric motor, with overall power listed at 209 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque.

In America, there was time in the late ’70s and early ’80s when some misguided industrious souls decided to recreate few of the most iconic shapes in motoring history. Kit cars with shapes emulating classic Delahaye, Bugatti, Auburn, Mercedes, Pierce-Arrow, Bentley and Rolls-Royce designs flourished, many poorly made and based on cars like the Lincoln Town Car or Buick Regal. With the originals selling for six, seven or even eight figures, it was not surprising that anyone would want a budget alternative, but the offerings were more of an insult to the originals than a tribute.

Delahaye USA is offering modern interpretations of some of those classic designs which represent the opulence apart from being engineering marvels. Their latest creations is the “Bella Figura” Bugnotti Coupe that buys its inspiration from the 1937 Bugatti Type 57S.

The company is showing off a 1/4-scale model right now, you should be prepared as the company launch a full-size version for the first time this fall. Offering everything from the custom-built heated  as well as cooled carbon-fiber, Delahaye USA plans to offer a turnkey version of the coupe on a custom chassis with an alloy body for $450,000 because it is set to debut at Retro Auto Aug. 13 to Aug 15, in Pebble Beach, during the annual classic car festivities in Northern California.

The Swift+ which is a  Chevrolet Aveo–like, Daewoo-built vehicle has been available in Canada for some time, but now in its fifth generation, the actual Swift has primarily been exclusive to the Japanese and European markets. Since the ’90s, the car has not been available in the U.S. but that looks to change with the next-generation of the micro-hatch, caught here tooling around the Nürburgring.

Takashi Nakayama, Suzuki’s top engineer had confirmed that the next Swift was being developed to meet U.S crash standards. While that is not an official confirmation, it does mean that Suzuki is strongly considering launching it here. I hope it is already a done deal, as the Swift is consistently cited as one of the world’s least sucky small cars to drive.

A few details are available there. The rear end is none too flattering, reminding us of the Nissan Versa hatchback. The front looks like it adopts an aggressive grille like that of Suzuki’s mid-size Kizashi but adds its own twist, with large bug-like headlights.

Padding under the camo effectively hides sheetmetal details, but the Swift does appear to sport a bodyline that bisects the door handles as it connects the trailing point of the headlight to the taillight. A glimpse of the interior reveals less information but if it follows the Kizashi’s lead in material quality and design, it should be a decent place to spend time.

As the American micro-car segment floods with new entrants such as the Mazda 2, Ford Fiesta,  Chevrolet Spark and Fiat 500, I would be quite surprised if Suzuki left the Swift on the sideline.
