Most Expensive Big Cities of World

Now! Mercer’s 2009 Worldwide latest Cost of Living survey list has come in which Tokyo is most expensive city of the world and is followed by Osaka, Moscow and Geneva those were at the top last year. Over the last one year, the drastic changes has accounted in the exchange rates for the important changes in the order of the cities in the new list. According to the Mercer Human Resource Consulting and Economist Intelligence Unit cost-of-living surveys, there is a list of the world’s most expensive cities. Many factors come into cost-of-living of a city for expatriate employees like consumer confidence, monetary value, interest rates, investment, and exchange rates of the country’s currency as well as housing costs.

This list does not account for cost-of-living savings accrued to local citizens through health care, government-subsidized housing and differences in taxation, education and various other factors not related to expatriates. For expatriates, cost of living may be higher than for local residents in a developing country, if expatriates expect a standard of living similar to a developed country. Below is the list showing top 20 cities from top to bottom.

Tokyo is in first position; Osaka is in second position, up nine places since last year, whereas Moscow is now in third place, Geneva is in fourth places to fourth position , Hong Kong moves up to reach fifth.

New York City is used as the base city for the index and scores 100 points in Mercer’s 2009 survey, all cities are compared against New York and measured currency movements against the US dollar. Tokyo scores 143.7 points, nearly three times costly as Johannesburg with an index score of 49.6. Across six continents, the survey covers 143 cities and measures the comparative cost of over 200 items in every location include transport, housing, food, household goods, clothing and entertainment.
