I have a very simple concept i.e. pay more and get more. Therefore, it has gone with mobile phone subsidies in this phone world, a system that has served us for well over a decade.
At the customer service counter, it was never spelled out as clearly as anyone would have liked, it was fairly straightforward to understand: you bought a phone on a multi-dimensional sliding scale of functionality, novelty and attractiveness.
By and large, a pricing scale was there that matched up with it one-to-one. You understood that if you wanted a megapixel camera, or MP3 playback, a color external display then you’d pay a few more dollars and you understood also that you could knock a hundred dollars off of that number by signing up to a two-year contract. In exchange for a guaranteed revenue stream, your carrier is willing to throw you a few bucks off a handset- a square deal, all things considered.
So, why is FCC in a tizzy and how can we make it better?
