The “space barley” used to make this beer is extracted from the fourth-generation descendant of the Haruna Nijo malting barley that spent five months aboard during the International Space Station in 2006 as part of research that Sapporo conducted with the Russian Academy of Sciences and Okayama University with the aim of achieving self-sufficiency in food in the space environment.

Another purpose of the research was to study the adaptability and life cycle of barley in zero-gravity.

The proceeds will benefit Okayama University that will use the funds to promote science education for children as well as foster the development of space science research in Russia and Japan.¬
