Indian IT sector seems to be back to its blooming days of hiring, as Infosys, the top Indian Information and Technology Company, has projected that this year alone, up to 180,000 employees will probably get hired by the 5 major IT companies of the country.
In a statement, Infosys CEO Kris Gopalakrishnan said, “growth is back and most companies are hiring in large numbers again. The top five companies are estimated to hire 160,000-180,000 new employees in the next 12 months”.
He said that the growth is back and companies are expanding their headcount. Further, he stated that, “the IT industry has grown quickly over the last 15 years. For example, it had about 150,000 employees in 1993 and around 500,000 in 1999. Today, it employs around two million people”.
Such mass hiring activities were last observed by Indian IT companies in 2007, after which they had to put brake on mass hiring and even trim down their existing staff in order to manage the trade and industry slowdown.
Gopalakrishnan was present at an event where he further added, “In 2008, the industry saw growth coming down to single digit. Most companies stopped hiring and expanding.” In 2007, more than 400,000 opportunities were formed by all the companies. However, in 2008 & 2009 it fell down to 250,000 and 150,000 people respectively, and in 2010 it was merely above 100,000.
