The mobile payments technology, known as NFC (Near Field Communication), is anticipated to see substantial surge over the next three years or so, as it is being expected that one out of every five Smartphones would be NFC-compatible by 2014.

Recently, a research company called Juniper Research had conducted a study, which revealed that around 300 million Smartphones around the world NFC technology would be using by 2014.

NFC has been in news in the past as well, when Google cited it as the next big thing, and has offered its support for the technology on its Android platform. However, currently there are only a few mobile phones, such as Samsung Nexus S, which support the mobile payment technology.

Big companies such as Apple, Nokia, BlackBerry and Microsoft, are also working on providing this smart technology in the coming months on their Smartphones and platforms.

The research company has estimated that countries which adopt the technology at its primary stage will lead to growth in the Near Field Communication market. The company also said that almost half of the North America’s Smartphones would be NFC-enabled by 2014, with Western Europe also not lagging behind.

In a statement, Howard Wilcox, who studied and wrote the report, said “Juniper’s market analysis highlighted that, although there are still hurdles ahead, NFC prospects have been boosted by the succession of mobile operator and device vendor announcements.”

There are millions of people who are known amongst their peers for the rough handling of their phones, such as dropping them on the floor or even water. Such acts can spell disaster for Smartphones, with the damage to the touch-sensitive screen being the biggest concern for all users. Now, Motorola has launched a Smartphone, Defy, which can battle the elements – namely water, impact and dust – to considerable extent with utmost easy. Certainly, Motorola Defy will have a huge following the times to come.

Motorola Defy

Motorola Defy sports a 3.7” capacitive touchscreen that is graced with four feather-touch keys placed on the bottom. The phone is extremely tough and covered completely so that no dust or water can enter the body, thereby providing the basis for water-resistant and dust-proof. The claim of impact-proof is not official, but tests have shown that it can withstand general falls better as compared to other Smartphones. And, Corning’s Gorilla Glass Display provides it the tough screen that is scratchproof, thereby making it ideal for those who are prominent rough users of phones. This phone is secured by screws from the sides, and the micro-USB and 3.5mm headphone jack are covered by rubber flaps to disallow entry of water. The rubbery-plastic used on the back does not allow the water to stick to the body, thereby providing extra water-resistance, and the back-flap is, obviously, tightly closed.

Now, coming to the specifications, this phone runs on Android 2.1 OS, with a 2.2 update scheduled for Q2 2011. This ergonomically designed phone can be availed in white or black color at a price of Rs. 17,000 across India. The 5MP camera with autofocus and flash is not the best feature of the phone, just like the absence of a front camera. But, the responsive screen, fast 800MhZ processor, EDGE, GPRS, 3G, Bluetooth v2.1, Wi-Fi and 1540mAh Li-Po battery do justice to the price tag.

The bottom line is that though there are various other phones available with similar or better features, there will be none as sturdy and reliable as this one, especially with an Android Froyo OS.

If the industry sources are to be believed, then Apple’s latest version of iPhone will not support the NFC technology.

The NFC or Near Field Communication technology is the one which allows consumers to contactless payments by just simply waving a device over the reader. This technology is almost similar to the one that is used by the Oyster Card. Any device that consists of a NFC chip can be easily detected by a NFC supported cell phone. It also includes payments, T-shirts and posters, and is considered to be the next big thing in the technology world.

Apple iPhone 5

A few months back, the NFC technology was introduced by Google in its recently released Smartphone, Google Nexus S.
But, according to various mobile operators in the UK, Apple is not going to offer or support this technology anymore in its yet-to-be-launched Apple iPhone 5.

According to reliable sources, “The new iPhone will not have NFC, Apple told the operators it was concerned by the lack of a clear standard across the industry.”

It has been reported that the Apple is working on its own technology to take on NFC, and would let the user make payments through iTunes.

Recently, Air New Zealand has declared that within a month its passengers would be capable of using their mobile phones on its new black A320. However, they need to pay certain price for using that service.

The call and data charges have also been disclosed, according to which in In-flight roaming an outbound text would cost 80c, call charges would be $3.50 per minute, incoming call charges would be $2.00 per minute and $20 per megabyte of data. And, this service is being initiated in partnership with Vodafone and New Zealand on Air.

A statement from the company stated that “The Airbus A320 aircraft, which commences its first commercial flights today, will be fitted with new inflight mobile technology which will enable the safe use of mobile phones to make and receive phone calls, text messages and emails, during the cruise stage of flights.” However, the service is applicable only to people travelling on the black A320 and, that too on domestic routes. Moreover, if the customers are using other mobile providers’ services then they should contact them for the calls and text prices, Air New Zealand said.

Captain David Morgan, G.M. airline operations, Air New Zealand, said that the new technology emphasized the airline’s pledge to present its customers with innovative solutions. Further he stated, “Feedback from our customers shows they value being able to stay in touch with work colleagues, friends and family while they are in the air.”

Apple iPad was launched in April, last year, and since then more than 15 million pieces have already been sold. However, very soon it is going get tough competition from Google.

This year Goolge is going to release the newest version of Google’s Android OS, which is named as Honeycomb, which has been particularly developed for tablets.

It possesses many new features, such as improved graphics, the capability to buy applications from a computer, buy features inside the app and video chat.

In a statement to a leading British news channel, Hugo Barra, Director of Products for Mobile, Google, said, “This is a serious investment of years of design and engineering to really nail the experience for a larger screen.”

He also added that “This is not a large phone – we wanted tablets running Honeycomb to not just be bigger but also to be better.”

Honeycomb will make its entry to the global market via Motorola as it would be the first company to introduce it in its gadget. And, that gadget has been named as Xoom, which is due to hit the global market this month, though, a specific release date and price have not been revealed yet.

BlackBerry has announced that it has implemented a solution for legally intercepting messenger and internet services. But, it denied similar access on BlackBerry Enterprise Server, saying that the firm has “no ability to provide its customers’ encryption key”.

Research-in-Motion, the makers of BlackBerry, said in a statement that “the company has now delivered a solution that enables India’s wireless carriers to address their lawful access requirements for our consumer messaging services, which includes BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) and BlackBerry Internet Services (BIS) e-mail.” However, the permission of legalized access does not stretch to BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES), which is in fact a Virtual Private Network (VPN) solution.

This world leading mobile manufacturing firm also said, “as we have stated on several occasions and as we have set our company’s Principles for Addressing Lawful Access Matters, no change can be made to the security architecture for BES customers since, contrary to any rumours, the security architecture is the same around the world and RIM truly has no ability to provide its customers’ encryption keys.” It also added that it can’t access instructions encrypted all the way through BES given that neither the respective firm nor the wireless operators are ever in control of the encryption keys.

Earlier, RIM had guaranteed the Indian government that they will present the final solution for the legal interception of BlackBerry Messenger services by 31st January 2011.

And voila! You can surf through all your applications stored in your handset. But then again it’s worth noting that this system works only with iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 since other models have a slow processor.

The iPhone can be connected only via cable since the Table Connect does not support Wi-Fi connectivity. The table works really very fast and allows for all the typical hand gestures so that anyone and everyone can use it to their convenience.

Apple’s 3.5 inch display iPhone may not be a bad choice and in fact big enough for normal every-day usage. But sometimes you may want to view something really big, and that is when this 58 inch multitouch display from TableConnect comes handy. Just by plugging in your iPhone and running an application, you can interact with your iPhone on the table and in a larger way.

This is for real, but still under process. How soon it hits the market, we are not very sure. Three developers from Austria have invented this and there are various videos and demonstrations available on the internet. So, just watch out, all you gadget freaks!

Has it ever happened that you were talking on your mobile phone and in the middle of the sentence, the phone’s battery ran out? Well, this is a problem faced by many of us, and to address it, Nokia has launched a portable battery, which can charge two Nokia handsets at a time. The Nokia Extra Power DC – 11 can provide full power to one phone at a time, and can be charged with the standard Nokia adapter. It is compact & stylish, and equipped with charging points in form of the standard 2mm Nokia charging pin as well as micro USB.

This portable charger is fitted with a 1500mAh battery, which can completely charge a phone using the 2mm charger. It can be also be used to charge phones manufactured by other companies through the micro USB, but can be charged using the 2mm charger only, which is probably its only limitation. The design of Nokia Extra Power DC – 11 is sleek to say the least; it comes with a silver aluminum body, and fits in the pocket with utmost ease. It weighs 94gms, and has dimensions 113×56×11 mm, which give it the size of a regular phone, albeit a thin one.

On its body, only one button can be found, which is used to turn it on. A light is placed on the body to indicate whether the Nokia Extra Power DC – 11 is charging, idle or being charged. The charging cables snuggle up conveniently on the sides, which adds to the appeal of this portable charger. The only downside is for the non-Nokia users, since the charger for this device comes free with a Nokia handset, and they have to shell out a few extra bucks to buy one for themselves. Otherwise, in all entireties, the Nokia Extra Power DC – 11 is a godsend, so go buy one!

Nokia, the world’s most popular and biggest cell phone manufacturers will introduce their latest Smartphone model E7 next week at the annual media and industry event. This phone will mainly be introduced to jump back on track, since Nokia was showing a decrease in profits as well as share prices in the last few years.

This latest flagship model comes with a large touchscreens and full keyboard. Apart from this Nokia will also introduce its new N8 model, the first phone to use the Symbian 3 software that also provides a striking 12 megapixel camera; a one of its kind.

Nokia undoubtedly controls almost 40 percent of the Smartphone market with its Symbian software, but has again lost out to other cell phone manufacturers such as Apple and Research in motion in terms of easily usable features in phones. In fact last year Apple exceeded Nokia as the largest handset maker generating maximum profits.

But with Nokia all set to launch the new Smartphones; they are positive they will again be the leaders of the cell phone industry. So look out for some good designs, remarkable features with focus on touchscreens; that too at competitive prices.

It has been noticed that the features in this lost-and-found next-generation iPhone are completely new and drastically different from what came before.

Here’s the detailed list about Apple’s next iPhone:

1.What’s new

2.Front-facing video chat camera

3.Camera flash

4.Improved regular back-camera (the lens is larger than the iPhone 3GS)

5.Improved display. It is not clear if it is the 960×640 display thrown around before, it certainly looks like it, with the ‘Connect to iTunes’ screen displaying much higher resolution than on a 3GS

6.Micro-SIM instead of standard SIM (like the iPad)

7.Split buttons for volume

8.Power, volume and mute buttons are all metallic

What are the changes?

1.The back is completely flat, made of either glass or ceramic or shiny plastic for the cell signal to poke through. Tapping on the back makes a more higher and hollow pitched sound compared to tapping on the glass on the front/screen, but that could just be the orientation of components inside making for a different sound

2.Slightly smaller screen than the 3GS (but higher resolution)

3.An aluminum border going completely around the outside

4.16% Larger battery

5.3 grams heavier

6.Everything is more squared off

7.Internals components are miniaturized, shrunken and reduced to make room for the larger battery

So, what is your opinion about the product? Please share with me here.

Dell leaked yesterday, Aero as compared to the other crazy handsets
is definitely the runt of the litter. But the Aero will be first on your doorstep with a leaked Q2 AT&T release date.

On the hardware side, it is a slow 624MHz Marvell processor that drives that 3.5 inch capacitive multitouch screen. But it is planned to ship with a capacitive stylus for handwriting recognition like the Chinese model.

More interesting is the software. Aero comes with QuickOffice right out of the box like Motorola’s CLIQ and supports Microsoft ActiveSync and Exchange to keep in touch with your work or business. There is on-device photo editing and ‘aggregated notifications’ for the gathering of social networks Dell’s agreed to support.

The device would have a WebKit browser with Flash Lite, leaks reveal it will have a robust media player also – robust enough to have some sort of download ability and music streaming protected by Windows Media DRM. Though it is still Android 1.5 onboard, docs show Dell plans a “refresh” to Android 2.1 sometime between Q3 and Q4, but it is not easy to say whether the Aero will get an OTA update or only new Aeros will ship with Eclair.

So, just wait and find out this handset.

The open-source software, Boxee started out as free, has designed to bring Internet video content to your living room televisions which is no longer content with just one screen. A recent job posting on the Boxee website indicates that the New York company is looking for an iPhone and iPad app developer to be the first member of Boxee’s new Mobile Applications Team.

According to the job posting, Boxee considers ‘other screens’, for ex: iPhone and iPad screens, is just as important as television screens for video. The company is looking for a coder with Objective-C expertise (a language used on the iPhone OS and Mac OS X) and one published app, at least in the Apple app store. The job posting also notice “Android development experience a plus” it looks like Boxee does not plan on limiting itself to the iPhone and the iPad.

Boxee, open-source software will play music and videos stored on your hard drive, as well as content from other sources including Youtube, Netflix, Shoutcast, Picasa, Last.fm, CNN.. All these and more is accessible through an attractive interface that can be navigated with a remote. As for the social media angle, Boxee allows you to share what you are watching and your recommendations with other Boxee users.

Boxee’s software gained credibility quickly as a way to turn your TV into an internet-content-viewing haven and the company has announced that they would be boxing up Boxee and selling the software as part of a set-top box. The Boxee set-top box is manufactured by D-Link and it costs $200 and it will be available in the second quarter of 2010.

The box connects to the internet via wired Ethernet or Wi-Fi and connects to yours’ TV’s via HDMI, RCA cables or optical cables (it features 1080p output).

The Kin Two outshines its sibling, the Kin One with the stronger specs and a better design. But is it perfect? No, omissions and limitations within the software keep it from being a threat to lower-priced smartphones on Verizon.

The design of the Kin Two is much more attractive than its squat sibling. It has a roomier keyboard as well as a larger display. When my friend John Beg, took it for tests, he found the keys comfortable to press and nicely spaced.

He was impressed with the Kin Two’s 8-megapixel camera and he took a few snapshots at the launch event, which took place in a dimly lit nightclub. He was also impressed with how powerful the flash was. Faces were nicely highlighted without being completely blown out.

The details appeared sharp and colors looked fairly natural in his test shots. The Kin Two also captures HD video, which he unfortunately did not get a chance to test out. More info we will disclose further.
