‘Laser’ The Conventional Technology

Posted by admin On February - 28 - 2011

Recently, the conventional laser technology has completed its 50 years since it was brought into use. To honor the occasion, the Raman Science Center (RSC) has declared that it will set up a short-term exposition to showcase the wonders of this extraordinary technology.

The exposition is scheduled to start on an auspicious Indian National Science Day which is on 28th February, and then it would be on display for the up-coming 45 days.

Shrikant Pathak has been assigned as the project coordinator, and while speaking on the marvels of Laser, he stated, “This is one invention that has given solutions even before the problems arose. There are so many wide avenues where this technology is already being utilized, yet there are many yet to be discovered. There is immense possibility that laser gives to the world of science.”

Laser technology has contributed a lot in our lives, whether it is in entertainment field, or the communication one, and even in the defence, and scientists have even used this exceptional technology in many devices and equipment which are well known for their functionality. Moreover, it is the only possible technology being used all over the world to measure distances between the earth, planets and other heavenly bodies, such as moon.

For the first time ever, Taiwan is going to allow the Chinese investors to hold shares in its prized technology companies, which is being considered as a crucial and major step towards opening the doors of its economy to China, because of which the relations will also improve.

According to the reports in media, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Taiwan, has made a proposal which allows a maximum Chinese investment of not more than 10 percent and 50 percent in the Taiwanese technology companies and in the new technology-sector joint ventures, respectively. And, it is being anticipated that the plan would get the approval from the cabinet and will be declared publicly soon.

If the proposal gets passed, the new rules will give the access to Chinese investors in a few of Taiwan’s most internationally acclaimed companies. For example, the Taiwanese notebook computer manufacturers are making 9 out of 10 pieces all over the world. Semiconductor Manufacturing Company based in Taiwan is the world’s largest contract chipmaker firm.

Moreover, it is being anticipated that the new rules will make it eventually a lot easier for the Taiwan-based organizations to build well planned alliances with their customers or suppliers in China.

Recently, Defence Research and Development Organization (DRDO) announced that it has developed a unique technology to spot human beings trapped under the trash of residential and commercial buildings after earthquakes or massive landslides.

Chief Controller, Research and Development, DRDO, Prahlada was present at the occasion of the launch of an insect repellent and there he told Press Trust of India that, “It is called Acoustic Life Detector or Sanjeevani. It uses highly sensitive acoustic sensors and audio signals to listen to the low frequency sounds from below the debris.”

The acoustic sensors are programmed to spot a range of low frequency signals, such as moaning, scratching, tapping or hitting sounds made by the people trapped in the debris of homes and other buildings.

The Chief Controller, R&D, DRDO, also stated that, “It would be provided to disaster management teams, earth quake response forces and police and fire services department. We are in the process of selecting a private industry which would go for its mass production and marketing.”

This newly developed technology is a part of Accelerated Technology Assessment and Commercialization (ACTC) programme, which is being jointly supported by DRDO and the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).

Reliance Power, one of the subsidiaries of Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group could make over Rs. 2K crore by using coal technology, which is energy efficient as well as environment friendly at its 4,000 MW power project at Madhya Pradesh’s Sasan area.

According to the company release, it is a 4,000 MW Ultra Mega Power Project by Reliance Power in Sasan, where it will use super-critical technology which is efficient & environment friendly. This power project has been registered with the Clean Development Mechanism Executive Board (CDM-EB) of United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The specific registration with CDM-EB will allow this Sasan-based power project to earn certified emission reduction (CER) credits, each equaling to one tonne of CO2.

The release also stated that this Ultra Mega Power Project by Reliance Power will produce roughly 22.5 million CERs in its initial ten years of operation with the projected incremental profits from the trade of CERs of over Rs. 2K crore.

The CERs can be bought and sold, and will result in vital additional revenue for the super-critical Ultra Mega Power Project (UMPR). Apart from all this, it is the first power project from India to get registered with the CDM-EB. It is the also the first of the 3 UMPPs which have been awarded to Reliance Power.

USA Launched New Technology to Scan Travelers

Posted by Ekant Sharma On February - 4 - 2011

Recently, the Transport Security Administration of USA said that it is examining new “advanced imaging technology” (AIT) at three major airports nationwide, including the Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

The TSA or Transport Security Administration said in a press release that the new technology “enhances privacy by eliminating passenger-specific images and instead auto-detects potential threat items and indicates their location on a generic outline of a person.” The new technology is being introduced following a huge criticism intended at full-body scanners that take in depth images of each and every traveler.
In a press release, John Pistole, the TSA Administrator, said “we are always looking for new technology and procedures that will both enhance security while strengthening privacy protections.” He also stated that “testing this new software will help us confirm test results that indicate it can provide the same high level of security as current advanced imaging technology units while further enhancing the privacy protections already in place.”

Just a few days back, the TSA started examining the technology at Las Vegas McCarran International Airport and shortly will start testing it at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport and Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Federal officials argued that this newly developed technology will boost the effectiveness as employees working in TSA will no longer require viewing passenger-specific images in a detached room.

UK Seeks Bullet Trains From China

A Chinese railway official said that China will sell its high-speed railway technology to other countries that are willing to buy it. This statement came just after overseas news daily reported that by 2025 Chinese-made bullet trains would be hitting the railway stations in the United Kingdom.

Recently, one of the leading newspaper reported that China’s ambassador to Britain, Liu Xiaoming, had a meeting with UK ministers to talk about a deal to buy bullet trains and persuaded them that China could easily deliver the advanced trains at a much lower price.

The newspaper also reported that UK requires 120 bullet trains for the £30 billion ($47.6 billion) high-speed train project which would join London to other major regional cities, such as Manchester, in 2025.

Western producers, such as Siemens, Bombardier and Alstom are ready to provide these 120 high-speed trains but at the cost of £4 billion ($6.3 billion), but Chinese trains cost only half that, the report mentioned.

Spokesman for the Ministry of Railways, China, Wang Yongping, said “China is willing to export the high-speed rails technology to any country that wants to buy.” He also stated that “we own the most advanced technology of high-speed rails.”

Video Technology To Be Used In Domestic Cricket Matches in Pakistan

Posted by Ekant Sharma On February - 3 - 2011

For the upcoming domestic season of cricket matches, the Pakistan Cricket Board has planned to bring in a video recording system to take care of the mounting indiscipline-related problem created by players and sub-standard umpiring.

There are plans to put two video cameras and have a video operator in place to handle them at every centre where first class domestic and national one-day cup matches are to be played from the upcoming season, said, Sultan Rana, the head of the Pakistan Cricket Board’s domestic cricket division.

Sulatan Rana stated that, “It is true we have got a lot of reports from the umpires and team captains blaming each other with match referees also pointing towards indiscipline by players and unsatisfactory umpiring this season in domestic matches.”

Further, he added that since television channels do not telecast domestic matches live on a regular basis, the PCB felt that the solution to this problem is to record these cricket matches themselves.

He also said that, “we have created a three member committee, which is being headed by the Pakistan team manager and former captain, Intikhab Alam, to study the already present recording of some domestic matches that were video recorded with one camera this season.”

In his statement he added that “But from next season to make the system more effective we plan to have two cameras at each venue”.
