Delhi Roads To Be Re-laid With New Technology, Stated Yogender Chandolia

Posted by Ekant Sharma On January - 31 - 2011

To ensure better life of Delhi’s roads, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi is set to propose a motivated Rs 1,000 Crore plan to construct prime quality, durable roads in the capital. The city roads will be 10-12 inches thick, which is much more than current standards.

Yogender Chandolia, the Chairman of MCD Standing Committee, said that he will bring a plan to this effect while presenting the budget estimates of Municipal Corporation of Delhi for FY11-12 at a scheduled meeting in MCD House.

He stated, “We want to ensure longer life for city roads. The plan is to use ready mix concrete technology and pebble machines to build roads which will be 10-12 inches thick. To avoid the problem of digging by various agencies, space will be kept on the sides for utilities.”

He added that if the plan gets passed by the MCD House, work can be started by July-August of the present year.

Chandolia also stated that “The initial estimates say the cost might be Rs One crore per km, which may change after final estimates. There will be a 25-year guarantee for the roads. A similar project is in the pipeline in the city of Nagpur.”

According to him, the MCD’s strategy would be to zero in on only 2-3 reputed and experienced companies for the scheme, for which tenders will be invited after it gets the nod from the MCD House.

Chandolia also added that in order to ensure that the quality of roads is maintained, the civic agency plans to start making payment to the contracted companies in installments only after five years.

He also added that “We do have requests and we can think about it only after meeting domestic requirements.”

US$ 1 Billion Raised by Facebook From Non-US Investors

Recently, Facebook, the leading social media networking website, reported that it has raised $1 billion from non-U.S. investors. And if, the amount it received from the globally leading investment banking and securities firm Goldman Sachs and Russia’s Digital Sky Technologies in December, is added then the actual funding is $1.5 billion. However, in his report, Facebook did not mention how it will spend the whole $1.5 billion.

The investments value the social networking site now possesses is $50 billion, which is eventually more than the present market values of Yahoo and eBay. However, it is still less than Amazon and Google, the current leaders in the internet domain.

Moreover, this leading social networking site had an option to raise up to $1.5 billion from non-U.S. investors through Goldman, however, it constricted the offering to $1 billion. Facebook spokesman Mr. Jonny Thaw refused to clarify the decision to restrain the offering, which in-fact got oversubscribed.

As earlier predicted, Facebook also said that by 30th April, 2012, it will start filing public financial reports. However, technically speaking, it doesn’t mean an initial public stock offering, which is the most probable result because, Facebook, will have to prepare various disclosures as a publicly traded company anyway. The specific date for filing financial reports has come out in open because this firm has predicted that by the end of this year’s April, it will possess more than 500 shareholders.

Indian IT Sector’s Big 5 All Set To Hire 180,000 in 2011

Indian IT sector seems to be back to its blooming days of hiring, as Infosys, the top Indian Information and Technology Company, has projected that this year alone, up to 180,000 employees will probably get hired by the 5 major IT companies of the country.

In a statement, Infosys CEO Kris Gopalakrishnan said, “growth is back and most companies are hiring in large numbers again. The top five companies are estimated to hire 160,000-180,000 new employees in the next 12 months”.

He said that the growth is back and companies are expanding their headcount. Further, he stated that, “the IT industry has grown quickly over the last 15 years. For example, it had about 150,000 employees in 1993 and around 500,000 in 1999. Today, it employs around two million people”.

Such mass hiring activities were last observed by Indian IT companies in 2007, after which they had to put brake on mass hiring and even trim down their existing staff in order to manage the trade and industry slowdown.

Gopalakrishnan was present at an event where he further added, “In 2008, the industry saw growth coming down to single digit. Most companies stopped hiring and expanding.” In 2007, more than 400,000 opportunities were formed by all the companies. However, in 2008 & 2009 it fell down to 250,000 and 150,000 people respectively, and in 2010 it was merely above 100,000.

Posted by admin On January - 21 - 2011

The vibrant state of Gujarat is now planning to host Asia’s first commercial-scale tidal power project after completing a deal with a United Kingdom based marine energy company, officials revealed.

According to the State Energy Minister, Mr. Saurabh Patel, two or three areas had been identified in the Gulf of Kutch. He also said that in these areas, turbines from Atlantis Resources Corporation, a London based company, could be easily set up.

Patel also added that the environmental and commercial factors will also be taken into consideration, along with the extremely sensitive protective claims in the area where the sea is separated between India and Pakistan. He also stated that “we have to take into consideration that the local fishermen are not affected, that there is no harm to the environment and that traffic at the ports in the Gulf region is not affected.”

Atlantis’ recent study report on Gujarat stated that this Indian state has good potential for tidal development. Atlantis CEO Tim Cornelius said, “about two and a half years ago we ran a global study of tidal power resources and came up with some hotspots where resource seemed pretty well matched to load.”

This UK based company further added that the project would “require hundreds of millions of dollars of investment in tidal turbines.” Moreover, the study done by this firm on the waters around Gujarat also stated that the sea tides in that region are strong enough to produce 300MW of power.

BlackBerry has announced that it has implemented a solution for legally intercepting messenger and internet services. But, it denied similar access on BlackBerry Enterprise Server, saying that the firm has “no ability to provide its customers’ encryption key”.

Research-in-Motion, the makers of BlackBerry, said in a statement that “the company has now delivered a solution that enables India’s wireless carriers to address their lawful access requirements for our consumer messaging services, which includes BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) and BlackBerry Internet Services (BIS) e-mail.” However, the permission of legalized access does not stretch to BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES), which is in fact a Virtual Private Network (VPN) solution.

This world leading mobile manufacturing firm also said, “as we have stated on several occasions and as we have set our company’s Principles for Addressing Lawful Access Matters, no change can be made to the security architecture for BES customers since, contrary to any rumours, the security architecture is the same around the world and RIM truly has no ability to provide its customers’ encryption keys.” It also added that it can’t access instructions encrypted all the way through BES given that neither the respective firm nor the wireless operators are ever in control of the encryption keys.

Earlier, RIM had guaranteed the Indian government that they will present the final solution for the legal interception of BlackBerry Messenger services by 31st January 2011.

China Does It Again, Developed a New Technology

The Chinese scientists have established a new technology for salvaging the used nuclear fuel rods and transforming them into fuel which can be easily reused for running nuclear power stations, the state-run television station announced Monday.

Though this newly-discovered technology is a bit expensive and complex, it can reportedly bring out uranium and plutonium from the used nuclear fuel rods. It is being assumed to help China in relocating its present dependence on coal to nuclear plants for producing electrical energy. As per the Chinese state television report, this newly developed technology has been perfected after nearly 24 years of study by the Chinese scientists. It is believed to give China an adequate amount of fuel to easily run its nuclear stations for many years to come.

On Monday, the state-run CCTV also claimed that the new reprocessing technology would inflate the electricity producing volume of its current stockpile of uranium from an earlier assessed 70 years to 3,000 years.

Though China currently possesses some 13 nuclear power stations, it is still reliant on coal for fulfilling its huge electricity necessities. Moreover, presently China carrying out the procedure of constructing various new nuclear power stations as a part of efforts to spread its energy sources and decrease greenhouse releases.
