Google Launches Its Own 24×7 Online E-Book Store

Posted by admin On December - 17 - 2010

There is a good news for book readers;  Google has launched its 24×7 online e-book store, challenging Apple and Amazon by presenting a potential support to self-governing booksellers. As Apple is continuously trying to filch the promising e-book market away from Amazon’s Kindle by its product Apple iPad, world famous search engine king Google has jumped into the middle of the combat involving the monster of online retail and the emperor of the widgets. Moreover, rather complicating the e-book format combat, Google has put its power behind the EPUB and PDF formats, which are also being used by many other online e-book stores.

Apart from this, Google has also released a version of e-book software for Apple’s iPad as well as for other hi-tech mobile phones and tablets, which are using Google’s Android operating system. The Google e-book store lets its user to read books from any PC via a web browser, by which it has left the door open for Amazon’s Kindle owners to read books via Google e-book store by using the Kindle’s inbuilt browser.

As a result, Amazon has also announced that it will also go after Google’s lead and allow other websites to sell its e-books. This will eventually leave Apple with the most limiting platform, as its users can only purchase e-books via Apple’s iBookstore, which can be read only on its widgets.

Toyota launches Etios, in Sedan and Hatchback

Posted by admin On December - 2 - 2010

In the much-too-crowded small car market of India, Toyota’s absence was almost glaring, but the world’s largest carmaker has filled that void with Etios, its newest launch. The Toyota Etios will be manufactured by its makers in two models – Sedan as well as Hatchback, with the aim of bringing the company from the fringes to mainstream. The base price of this car has been set at Rs. 4.96 Lacs, while the top end model would cost Rs. 6.86 Lacs. Though a competitor for all vehicles in the small car segment, it is touted as the main rival for Maurti Swift and Swift Dzire.

The exteriors of Etios are stylish, but not as eye-catching as they could have been, but this was the case with Swift too, and look how everyone has warmed up to it! This car is available in four variants, all in petrol, but the buyers can choose any of the two Hatchbacks or two Sedans. The engines have capacities of 1.2L (80 bhp) and 1.5L (100 bhp), and the mileage recorded on Indian roads by Toyota is 17.6 kmpl, which is a laudable feat, considering the conditions of roads in the country. The fact that a car from world’s leading carmaker at economical rates, state-of-the-art features and excellent mileage will be in the minds of all Indian car buyers from now on.

Some of the features that are provided by Toyota in Etios are listed below:

  • Power steering
  • Power windows
  • Steering mounted audio controls
  • Automatic climate control system
  • Rear defogger
  • Steering adjustment
  • Remote central locking
  • Dash integrated music system
  • ABS (Anti-lock Braking System)
  • EBD (Electronic Brake Distribution)
  • Dual SRS airbags

This car sports a curved hood, almost-smiling grill, broad headlights, door handles of body color and shiny logos of the manufacturer. The look is rather boxy and unrefined, which can be a deterrent for many, but its interiors make up for it plentiful. The spacious interiors are extremely eye-catching and provide a luxurious feel to the car. The dashboard looks very organized, with the speedometer and trip being located at the center. Two round AC ventilators have been incorporated into the dashboard, and placed below the stereo system. The gear lever is placed strategically, while the steering wheel is situated at a position that provides comfort to the driver. Overall, this car will appeal to the masses and certainly make Toyota one of the preferred choices of Indians.

Scientists estimate universe older than Big Bang

Posted by admin On December - 1 - 2010

It is generally accepted by all scientists that the universe started with the Big Bang, almost 13.7 billion years ago. But this theory, put forward by Albert Einstein, could now be disputed by cosmological evidence gathered by two scientists. Professor Roger Penrose (of Oxford University) and Professor Vahe Gurzadyan (from Yerevan State University, Armenia) have found evidence that events occurred before the Big Bang, thereby making the universe older than earlier thought.

For the laymen, outer space has after-effects of the Big Bang, called Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) radiation. The two scientists used NASA’s Wilkinson Microwave Anisotophy Probe to find concentric circles, which suggest that universe did not begin as theorized by scientists, but instead is a cycle of aeons. Aeons are the biggest units of geological time and the discovery of these two men of science shows that there are 12 concentric circles in the universe.

Some of the abovementioned circles have as many as five rings, which are proofs of five massive events that occurred in their history, predating the creation of the universe on the premises of Einstein’s theory. According to Prof. Penrose, the circles are the imprints of awfully violent gravitational radiation waves that are generated upon the collisions of supermassive black holes. The report published online by the scientists says that these collisions happened in a previous aeon, and that the black holes would ‘eventually consume all matter in the universe’.
