OLPC represents a FIRST rocky step for Youth and Technology

Posted by Abhyudaya Tripathi On June - 30 - 2009
The One Laptop Per Child Association (OLPC) is a U.S. non-profit organization set up to over see the creation of an affordable educational device in the developing world to be in use. Its aim is “To provide educational opportunities for the world’s poorest children by providing each child with a rugged, low-power, low-cost connected laptop with software and content designed for joyful, collaborative and self-empowered learning.” Its current focus is on the construction, development and deployment of the XO-1 laptop.
They have five products: (1) the XO laptop; (2) an active antennas; (3) a multi-battery charger; (4) a school server and (5) a solar-powered WiFi repeater.
The One Laptop per Child association develops a low-cost laptop i.e the “XO Laptop” to revolutionize how we educate the world’s children. The OLPC XO is designed with students in mind: The keyboard (wrapped in a rubberized membrane) is built for food-encrusted and tiny fingers. And once you open the device you’ll find yourself faced with number of unfamiliar buttons which you’ll largely have to figure out through and error trial. The heavily-modded Fedora Linux core provides an entirely new way of doing things, deep-sixing any notions you might have about desktops, icons, and even file management. Kids in a classroom setting will probably grasp this quickly but grown-ups will wrestle with OLPC’s software as much as they do its hardware.
Sugar is free software, is the desktop environment originally developed for the One Laptop per Child computer/education project. Sugar is used on the OLPC XO-1 laptop computer. Like more traditional desktop environments, it is different as it does not use a “desktop” metaphor and only focuses on a single task at a time. It is written in interpreted Python programming language, whereas other environments are written in a compiled language such as C. Sugar is also called as the OLPC Python Environment.
Developers those who are interested in working on the Sugar interface or writing activities can have a development platform without using an XO laptop.
So, we have found that OLPC has generated a great deal of interest in Communication Technologies and the Information for Development in education. Their goal is to offer children around the world with new opportunities to explore, experiment, and express themselves.

Sony’s VPL-VW70 Projector makes your presentation a breeze

sony- VPL-VW70 -Projector

Sony’s VPL-VW70 is at the top position of their current home cinema projector line. Stylish grace, the midnight black, curved panels on the upper and lower sections of the unit are glossy, slick and frame the unit perfectly.  The position of the cooling fans is indiscernible and a motorized lens cover that effortlessly slides open when the power is turned on.

Feature of VPL-VW70 Projector

  • Especially good color accuracy
  • Overall excellent picture quality
  • Extremely good black levels, (when engaging the dynamic iris) but not the best
  • Dark scenes show some compression of dynamic range, meaning a bit less “pop and wow”
  • Audible noise is a bit less than average, compared to the competition
  • One of the least bright projectors in its price range, in both “best” and “brightest”   modes
  • Good placement flexibility

Sony VPL-VW70 Special Features

  • SXRD (LCoS) Panels

Sony uses Liquid Crystal on Silicon(LCoS), a reflective panel, as opposed to the translucent typical LCD panels. Sony calls their LCoS implementation SXRD.

Advantages of LCoS

  1. Pixel visibility, and screen door effect are effectively, non-issues with this Sony, visible at normal seating distances with a 1080p projector.
  2. The Sony and JVC LCoS projectors outperform almost all of the non- LCoS competition, in black level performance.
  • Iris Modes

Sony offers two modes for its dynamic iris i.e Auto 1 and Auto 2. Auto 2 allows the iris to close down for slightly blacker blacks but the dynamic range of scenes are mostly dark but have some bright areas. And if you choose Off, instead of Auto 1 or Auto 2, you can manually adjust the iris to dim the image with a slight improvement in contrast.

  • Panel Adjustment

The Sony allows separate adjustment of G, R and B panels, for better alignment. This can be a real plus if one of the color panels is a little off, compared to the others.

So, we predict that to cater to business users especially who have to travel frequently such as sales staff or consultants, Sony has especially designed VPL-VW70 Projectors.

Chassis production was suspended in 1917 to enable Rolls-Royce to concentrate on their aero engines.
The vehicle was modernized in 1920 and in 1924 which resulted in Rolls-Royce 1920 Pattern and Rolls-Royce 1924 Pattern. In 1940, 34 vehicles served in Egypt with the 11th Hussars regiment had the “old” turret had replaced with an open-topped one carrying.303 inch Bren machine gun, a Boys anti-tank rifle and smoke grenade launchers.

Delhi Metro is now planning to come with Platform screen doors

Posted by Abhyudaya Tripathi On June - 26 - 2009

MBM_Project_Photos_Blue_Line_Bangkok_Thailand_v01

Platform screen doors at train or subway stations screen the platform from the train. A relatively new addition to many metro systems around the world, with some platform doors later added to the system.

The Platform Screen Door System is designed to satisfy the growing demand from mass transit applications to provide increased passenger comfort and safety in fully automated, driverless metro applications.

Platform screen doors are full height, total barriers between the station ceiling and floor, while platform edge doors are full height, but do not reach the ceiling. So, they do not create a total barrier.

Platform screen doors help:

  • Prevent murders and suicide attempts by pushing.
  • Prevent passengers dropping objects onto the track. or falling onto the track
  • Reduce the risk of accidents, when trains passing through the station at high speeds.
  • To ensure that passengers can only move between platform and the train when the train is topped.
  • Improve climate control within the station (ventilation, heating and air conditioning are more effective when the station is physically isolated from the tunnel).
  • Limit the piston effect created by trains
  • Security as access to the tracks and tunnels is restricted.
  • Eliminates the need for motormen or conductors when used in conjunction with Automatic Train Operation, so reducing manpower costs.
  • Segregate the platform from the track to improve the passengers safety and the platform environment.
  • Prevents litter build up on the track which can be a fire risk.

So, we hope Delhi Metro come with Platform screen doors as soon as possible to make Delhi people life’s more secure and safe.
